Plano in the context of contact lenses refers to lenses that have no corrective power, meaning they do not alter vision. These lenses are typically used for cosmetic purposes or to protect the eyes without affecting eyesight.
In eye prescriptions, the term ‘plano’ refers to a lens with zero refractive power, meaning it neither corrects nearsightedness nor farsightedness. This designation is important for understanding specific lens requirements and for those who may need lenses without vision correction.
The term 20/30 in vision refers to a specific measure of visual acuity, indicating that a person sees at 20 feet what a person with normal vision can see at 30 feet. It is used in eye exams to assess the clarity or sharpness of vision.
DS on a glasses prescription stands for diopter sphere, indicating a spherical lens power that corrects nearsightedness or farsightedness without astigmatism. It is commonly used in many countries to denote pure spherical correction. Understanding this abbreviation helps patients interpret their prescription accurately.
The abbreviation PL on an eye prescription denotes a plano lens, meaning no refractive power is required for that eye. It is commonly used to indicate a zero prescription or a lens that does not alter vision.
Toric contacts are specially designed contact lenses that correct astigmatism by having different optical powers in multiple meridians. They differ from standard spherical lenses and are available in various materials and wearing schedules.
Corrective lenses are prescription optical devices—such as eyeglasses or contact lenses—used to adjust the focus of light onto the retina and treat refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
The term “-1 vision” typically refers to a visual acuity measurement of –1.0 logMAR, indicating vision that is better than the standard 20/20 Snellen acuity. It is used primarily in clinical and research settings to quantify high levels of visual performance.
In an eyeglass prescription, “plano” indicates a lens with zero diopter power, meaning no vision correction is required. The term is used to denote a non‑prescription, flat lens and appears in the sphere column of a prescription.
In the context of optometry, ‘DVO’ is an abbreviation typically used to denote ‘Distance Vision Only.’ It specifies that the prescribed lens power is intended for correcting far-distance sight rather than reading or near tasks.
